1. QUADRATIC EQUATIONS 

Formulas to Revise

For ax² + bx + c = 0,
(α, β) = [–b ± √(b² – 4ac)]/2ac, where α and β are the roots of the equation.

• Sum of roots = –b/a
• Product of roots = c/a
• If roots of a quadratic equation are given, then the quadratic equation can be represented as:

      x² – (sum of the roots)x + product of the roots = 0

(i) If b² − 4ac > 0, then the quadratic equation has two real and unequal/unique roots.
(ii) If b² − 4ac < 0, then the quadratic equation has two imaginary roots.
(iii) If b² − 4ac = 0, then the quadratic equation has two real and equal roots.

Q. Solve the equation 4x² +4√3x +3=0 by the method of completing square.

Q. Solve the equation px² +(p² - q²)x - q² = 0 by using the quadratic formula.

Q. A two digit number is such that the product of its digits is 18. When 63 is subtracted from the number, the digits interchange their places. Find the number.

(i) n^th term of an arithmetic sequence: a_n = a + (n – 1)d 

(ii) Sum of n terms of an arithmetic sequence: S_n = n/2 [2a+(n–1)d]
